“Kia is one of the fastest growing auto brands in the U.S.1, and sports marketing initiatives such as our involvement with the LPGA have significantly raised awareness and consideration for the brand and our vehicles,” said Michael Sprague executive vice president, marketing & communications, KMA.  “With the success of the past three tournaments, we are pleased to continue as title sponsor for the Kia Classic and bring the tournament to the luxurious Aviara Golf Club in 2013.”

Kia Motors America Unveils All-New 2014 Forte Sedan at Los Angeles International Auto Show

Pulling the silk off the all-new 2014 Forte sedan today at the Los Angeles International Auto Show, Kia Motors America (KMA) revealed a stunning European design-inspired sedan that makes it clear the Korean auto manufacturer has another winner in its line-up of sought-after cars and CUVs.  Sitting on an all-new chassis that is longer, wider and lower than the previous-generation Forte, the all-new third-generation Forte will offer more room, more performance and more premium amenities when it’s expected to go on sale in the first quarter of 2013.  The all-new 2014 Forte will be offered in LX and EX variants with a choice of an efficient 1.8-liter engine or a more powerful 2.0-liter engine.

“The all-new Forte significantly raises the bar, offering upscale amenities and eye-catching appeal,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president of marketing & communications, KMA.  “When you combine exclusive available features like a ventilated driver’s seat and UVO eServices in a car with such an attractive design, it’s very clear the all-new Forte sets a new standard for the compact segment.”

Set to arrive at Kia retailers in early 2013, the all-new Forte will represent the heart of KMA’s small-car line-up, replacing the current Forte, which has been a sales success story since launching in 2009.  Slotted between the Rio sub-compact sedan and the best-selling Optima mid-size sedan, the all-new Forte includes a raft of unexpected available premium features in a package that easily accommodates five passengers and their belongings.

Unexpected Premium Features
Offered in LX and EX trim levels, the all-new Forte proudly carries on Kia’s reputation for offering premium features that redefine automotive segments.  The LX model comes standard with steering wheel mounted audio controls, SiriusXM™ Satellite Radio1, Bluetooth® wireless technology2, power windows, air conditioning and power heated outside mirrors among the many features that make the Forte stand out from its competition.  The optional Popular Package adds 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, keyless entry with remote trunk release and a sliding front armrest. The Eco Package includes Kia’s ISG (Idle Stop & Go) system, dual-zone automatic temperature control with rear seat ventilation and unique “eco” badge.

Stepping up to the EX trim broadens Forte’s appeal with additional comfort and convenience features.  Kia’s next-generation UVO in-vehicle infotainment system with eServices is standard and can now be integrated with an optional navigation system.  Additional standard EX features include remote keyless entry with trunk opener, rear camera back-up display3, a sliding center armrest and a cooling glove box.  The new optional Flex Steer system allows the driver to choose between three distinct steering profiles:  Comfort, Normal and Sport.  Features found in the optional Premium Package include heated front and rear seats, a 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat with class-exclusive air-cooled ventilation, leather seat trim, power sunroof, 17-inch alloy wheels and push button start with Smart Key and a heated steering wheel.  Opting for the Technology Package garners HID headlights, LED tail lights, a 4.2-inch color LCD cluster screen and dual-zone automatic temperature control with rear seat ventilation.

Enhanced Performance, Improved Ride and Handling
The all-new Forte offers spirited performance thanks to two advanced four-cylinder engines.  The LX features a 1.8-liter powerplant, while the EX comes standard with a 2.0-liter engine.  Both engines feature dual continuously variable valve timing and a lightweight intake manifold that reduces weight by 30 percent over a cast unit.  The aluminum “bed plate” located below the cylinder block reduces engine NVH levels and improves block rigidity by 30 percent.

With 148 horsepower available at 6,500 rpm and 131 lb.-ft. of torque on tap at 4,700 rpm, the 1.8-liter MPI inline four-cylinder engine found in the LX routes power to the front wheels through either a standard six speed manual transmission or an optional six speed automatic gearbox.

Forte EX enhances the driving experience with a 173-horsepower (at 6,500 rpm) 2.0-liter inline four cylinder GDI engine.  With a robust 154 lb.-ft. of torque available at 4,700 rpm, the EX comes standard with a six speed automatic.

The all-new Forte rides on a chassis that is longer (by 1.2 inches), lower (0.6 inches) and wider (0.2 inches) than the previous Forte sedan.  With its 106.3-inch wheelbase, two inches longer than the outgoing model, the all-new Forte rides on a McPherson strut front suspension and a coupled torsion beam rear axle.  On-center steering feel is improved utilizing larger bushings and revised front suspension geometry.  Electric power steering has replaced the hydraulic system from the previous Forte, reducing parasitic load. Optional Flex Steer puts the driver firmly in control with settings for Comfort, Normal and Sport, which vary steering effort at the touch of a steering wheel-mounted button.

The base LX manual rides on 195/65R-15 tires, while 205/55R-16 tires on 16-inch alloy wheels are optional.  The top-of-the-line EX is shod with the same 55-series tires. Low-profile 215/45-17 tires mounted on sporty 17-inch alloy wheels are optional.

Sport Sedan Design From California
With an aggressive stance, broad shoulders and a windshield rake that can only be described as sporty, the all-new Forte looks as good parked as it does carving through a remote canyon road. Influenced by European sport sedan styling, the Forte’s modern aesthetic was born in California at Kia’s American Design Center in Irvine.

Dramatically swept headlight lenses cut deeply into the front fenders and incorporate projector headlamps.  LED positioning lights create distinct eyebrows, making the Forte instantly recognizable in a crowd.  Gentle sculpting along the Forte’s lower flanks taper the sheet metal inward, affording the car a taut, nimble appearance without diminishing its road presence.  Around back, the up-kicked fender line and trunk design, with its deep horizontal crease, lend width and charisma while allowing the complex curves of the tail lights to flow over the rear haunches.

A Modern and Sophisticated Cabin
Opening the wide doors reveals a cabin sculpted in organic curves.  Gentle ripples across the instrument panel convey serenity, as if small waves are radiating from a pebble dropped into a pond. The driver-centric cabin is canted 10 degrees and features high-quality materials and soft touch points.  Large, easy-to-read instruments dominate the binnacle, and secondary controls fall easily to hand.  The optional 4.2-inch color LCD screen nestled between the white-on-black gauges in the EX provides trip and ancillary vehicle information front and center to the driver.  Tasteful chrome bezels ring the HVAC rotary knobs and the optional push-button start.  Additional chrome accents, standard Bluetooth® hands free phone integration and power windows, mirrors and door locks enhance the all-new Forte’s premium feel.  Optional leather seating trim, power sunroof, and dual-zone automatic climate control with rear seat vents and HID head lights take the Forte to new levels of sophistication.

Car tip: Pet Travel Safety in the Car

Dog-in-car-window

Do a little research.
Call to make sure your pet is welcome at your destination, and ask if there are policies you’ll need to follow. Also, find out if your pets are protected by your car insurance policy.

Get ID tags.
Outfit your pets with up-to-date ID tags that include your cell phone number, since you’ll be on the road. If there’s room, consider adding that you’ll offer a reward for their safe return, too.

Pack their bags.
Bring cleaning supplies, a towel or pet bed, portable bowls, food and water, any medications, a pet first aid kit, and lots of toys.

Feed them early.
To help prevent your pets from getting sick, feed them a couple of hours before you leave, not right before they get in the car.

Buckle up.
Have your pets ride securely in a crate or wear a harness. And, don’t let them ride with their heads out of the window.

Don’t leave them in the car.
Just like people, dogs and cats are susceptible to heat stroke — even if it isn't that hot outside or the car windows are left open — and they can even be stolen. Make sure you know where your pet is at all times.

When your windshield actually gets blurrier after you turn on your wipers during a rainstorm, it usually means that your wiper blades are dirty. To make them as good as new, dampen a cloth or rag with some full-strength white vinegar and run it down the full length of each blade once or twice.

Kia.Com mobile site wins "Triple Crown" Of Mobile Industry Awards

Asset

Kia Motors America's (KMA) mobile site ranked highest in J.D. Power and Associates' 2012 Automotive Mobile Site Study in a tie - the third major accolade this year for Kia.com's mobile site. In addition to ranking highest in the J.D. Power and Associates study, Kia.com's mobile site was recently named "Best Mobile Website" by Digiday's Mobi Awards and "Top Mobile Website in North America" by the Mobile Marketing Association. The three accolades are considered to be the "triple crown" in the automotive mobile marketing industry.

The Kia.com mobile site was created in 2011 by Ansible Mobile, Kia's mobile marketing agency, to meet the needs of an ever-growing population of online Kia shoppers who use smartphones in their vehicle-shopping process. The J.D. Power and Associates study, which examines the features and content of automotive manufacturer mobile websites and their usefulness in engaging shoppers, cited Kia's mobile site with performing particularly well in speed and appearance. The 2012 Automotive Mobile Site Study included 9,131 evaluations of automotive mobile websites from vehicle shoppers who intend to purchase or lease a vehicle within the next two years.

"Over the past several years mobile devices have become an integral tool for car shoppers, and we recognized the need for consumers to be able to access the Kia.com site while at the dealership or just before or after a vehicle test-drive," said Michael Sprague, executive vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. "In conjunction with Ansible Mobile, Kia developed a site that has proven to be a vital resource for our consumers and yet another component of our brand's transformation into a recognized industry leader."

Prior to this most recent J.D. Power accolade, Kia's mobile site was named "Top Mobile Website in North America" at the Smarties Gala organized by the Mobile Marketing Association and won a silver medal in the Global Website Category. The Digiday Mobi Awards, which honor overall excellence and breakthrough achievement in mobile media, marketing and advertising also recognized Kia's mobile platform by naming it "Best Mobile Website."

"Recognition from actual consumers is by far the greatest acknowledgement we can receive on the quality of the Kia mobile site," said JiYoung Kim, SVP of Creative Solutions, Ansible. "The entire Ansible team feels incredibly privileged to work for a brand that believes mobile can and should do more for today's mobile users, and we look forward to helping Kia expand their mobile leadership in the future."

Kia enters ranks of 'Top 100 Global Brands'

Kia_motors_enters_the_ranks_of_the_top_100_best_global_brands_620x398

Kia Motors Corporation enters the exclusive list of the ‘Top 100 Best Global Brands,’ according to the 2012 study released today by Interbrand, the world’s largest brand consultancy agency.

Kia’s remarkable increase in brand value is now estimated at $4.1 billion USD, which firmly sets the automaker at 87th place on the ‘Top 100 Best Global Brands’ list. This is a 50% increase from last year’s estimated brand value and far exceeds the average automotive brand value growth rate of 11%. The 2012 edition of Interbrand’s annual ‘Best Global Brands’ study was executed through a comprehensive brand performance analysis using best practice research methodology by expert analysts. The study measures a corporation’s financial performance in terms of the raw financial return to investors; role that a brand plays in the actual purchase decision; and brand strength, which is the ability of a brand to secure the delivery of expected future earnings.

The strong increase in Kia’s brand value closely mirrors the company’s recent surge in global sales, which have posted three consecutive double-digit year-or-year gains to cement Kia’s position as the world’s fastest growing major automotive brand. Over this three year period (2008-2011), Kia’s annual global sales have grown by 81% to nearly 2.5 million units.

Claire Chai, Vice President of Kia Motors Corp. Marketing Division, said, “Entering the ‘Top 100 Best Global Brands’ validates Kia’s commitment to continuously provide exciting and inspiring brand experiences. And it’s amazing to see what we can accomplish by staying true to who we are – a young and dynamic challenger that goes beyond expectations.

In addition to the major advances Kia has made on the product front, the company has also been executing numerous large-scale marketing initiatives that have helped raise awareness of the brand, including its sponsorship agreements with the world’s premier sporting events like the FIFA World Cup, Australian Open and National Basketball Association. Kia has also made effective in-roads towards engaging its young-at-heart customers through a strong presence on social media channels and innovative advertising campaigns such as the eccentric music-loving hamsters TV commercials seen in the USA for Kia’s iconic Soul urban crossover vehicle.

Folks, time for this week's Care Care Tip: Fall Guide for your Blades!

Windshield-wiper-blades-last-1
Blades – If you’ve ever tried to scrape frost from your windshield by dousing it with washer fluid and running the wipers excessively, you know worn wipers can't clear your view. Driving through a snowstorm with frosty buildup eroding your visibility is a horrible feeling. Avoid it by replacing your wiper blades before the weather becomes nasty.

Hey everyone, here are some gas-saving tips!

Gas-saving_tip_photo

While it is always wise to conserve natural resources, the recent price of gasoline has made even the most wasteful people think twice. Whatever your motivation, here are some gas saving tips from the pros at the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).

Monitor tires. Under inflated tires or poorly aligned wheels waste fuel by forcing the engine to work harder. (Let the tires cool down before checking the air pressure.) Out-of-line wheels, as evidenced by uneven tread wear, should be aligned by a professional.

Remove excess weight. Remove unnecessary items from the vehicle. Store only essentials in the trunk. Less weight means better mileage.

Consolidate trips and errands. Some trips may be unnecessary. Also, try to travel when traffic is light so you can avoid stop-and-go conditions.

Avoid excessive idling. Shut off the engine while waiting for friends and family.

Observe speed limits. Speeding decreases your miles per gallon.

Drive gently. Sudden accelerations guzzle gas. Anticipate traffic patterns ahead and adjust your speed gradually.

Use windows and air conditioning wisely. Your mileage should improve if you keep the windows closed at highway speeds, since air drag is reduced. This is true even with the air conditioning on-assuming that the system is in good working order. But turn the air conditioning off in stop-and-go traffic to save fuel.

Keep your engine "tuned up." A well-maintained engine operates at peak efficiency, maximizing gas mileage. Follow the service schedules listed in the owner's manual. Replace filters and fluids as recommended; have engine performance problems (rough idling, poor acceleration, etc.) corrected at a repair facility.

These conservation tips will not only save gasoline, they'll help extend the life of your vehicle. Win-win, indeed.

Folks, time for this week's Care Care Tip: The Do's and Don't of Car Washing

Kia_optima

Fact: Frequent washing is the single best thing you can do to maintain your vehicleis finish and preserve its showroom shape.

Don't wait to do a full wash if you see bird droppings, dead bugs, or other obvious contaminants building up on the paint surface. Bird droppings, in particular, have a high acidity that, if left on the paint for any length of time, can eat into the clear coat. If they reach deep enough, these scars can only be removed by sanding and repainting. Rinse this type of debris off the surface as soon as possible, using either water or an instant-detailer type of product.
Do rinse your vehicle off after a period of rainy weather if your region suffers from acid rain. The acidic chemicals in the rainwater will remain on the surface after the droplets have evaporated, leaving a mark that can permanently stain the paint.
Don't wash your vehicle when the sheetmetal is hot. The heat causes the soap and water to dry much faster than on a cool surface, which can make the washing process harder and possibly dull the finish. First thing in the morning is a good time to do a wash, or, if the vehicleis been parked in the shade for a while, the metal is likely to be cool enough to do it any time of the day.
Do use a bug-and-tar remover to finish the job. Mild carwash formulas often arenit tough enough to remove road tar, grease, or similar residues. For this, a strong bug-and-tar remover is necessary. Since this type of grime will usually blacken whatever you use to clean it, itis advisable to use a separate cloth for this job instead of your sponge or mitt.

2013 Kia Soul - A Surprisingly Versatile Vehicle

13_soul

If you are a young professional searching for a reliable new vehicle on a budget the world is not necessarily your oyster. While you may not be able to drive around in luxury car models such as Audi, Lexus, and Acura to name a few you can have a lot of the luxury features such as Bluetooth wireless communications to your media, a sunroof, and fog lights for under twenty thousand dollars.

There are a lot of good lease deals that run year round however there is an auto maker that has something to suit all needs if you are willing to fall for its unique styling and hamster mascot. I am of course speaking about the 2013 Kia Soul + model. The Kia Soul is a spunky, economy box. While its looks may take time to enjoy it is not without its uses. The boxy look is practical, larger adults can sit in the rear and front seats without issues with head or leg room. There is a lot of room for cargo and you can easily fold the seats down with the flick of a button they call them 60/40 fold flat seats.

The Kia Soul comes with a lot of feature standard that will cost a lot more if you went with another manufacture. These features include standard Bluetooth, UVO interactive infotainment system, three months of Sirius/XM Satellite radio, and plenty of storage compartments. There is a center storage arm rest, two large cup holders in the center and on each of the doors, there is a very deep glove box with 2 levels, there is a deep center box below the center speaker on the front dash, it is good for a wallet, or sunglasses anything that could fit in your hand. The Kia Soul comes standard with AUX and iPod jacks as well as two 12v front power outlets and one rear 12v power outlet.

The standard features alone were enough for me to give Kia my attention. Until 2012 I had always driven a Ford vehicle. Most recently I was driving a 2005 Ford Focus a base model without any bells and whistles. The time came for me to look into new cars. I was very impressed by Kia they used to be a subpar car company overall. I would not be alone in making that assessment that they used to be shoddy cars, however now they have improved their overall quality and perhaps this is due to advancements in technology or a partnership with Hyundai Motors.

I was impressed by how much you could get for fewer than twenty thousand dollars. With a down payment of around three thousand dollars you will assume about $212/mo to lease this type of Kia Soul if you are looking at the (+) model and add the premium sound and sunroof/fog light package. The package is well worth it the speakers are amazing the bass is deep; infinity is the name of the company who does the sound. The UVO system works well but it does take some getting used to, you can voice command a hands free phone call, Sirius channels, Radio stations, or explore your usb device. There is a center touch screen and with it you set your favorite stations or adjust settings. You can load music straight to the car it comes with a Hard Drive. You can upload from a USB stick or with a CD that you have MP3's on. It is a nice added bonus that I did not know at first.

The car shifts well it has two drive modes. You can drive in an Eco mode which gives optimizes output but muting the throttle which adds about one mpg in the city and one on the highway. The standard mode utilizes the 6 speed in line four cylinder engine. You can chose a power shift + and - stick to up and down shift through the gears, if you forget to down shift the car will do it for you or you can simply drive as a normal automatic vehicle. Kia offers standard stability and traction control with this vehicle. The ride height is welcomed and while the car does feel light it is balanced and maneuvers very well in traffic. The added insulation does well to dampen outside noise and winds at highway speeds. The interior materials have great feel to the touch they are of good quality. I average about 29 mpg overall. It is suggested you should get 27/35 mpg. This is a fun car to drive and one that you should test drive to see how much you enjoy it. There are two large pillars in the rear but any experienced driver shouldn't have a problem as this has been a design feature on cars for many years. The speed is great and the large windows provide great visibility.

I have never owned a Kia and I am leasing this 2013 Kia Soul. I have had it about a month know and love it. I enjoy all the standard features, the fuel efficiency the modern technology and the price point. It is really a car that delivers regardless of what you are looking for in a vehicle. It gets me around, it can haul five full sized American adults and I can also haul a lot of cargo which is important for shopping, moving, and getting supplies for my home office. I never thought the hamster car with the light up front speakers would win me over, but once I test drove it and did my homework I truly did fall in love with the Kia Soul.

Folks, happy Monday! It’s time for our weekly car care tip - Check your tires

Tires

For those of you who do not have hydrogen tires, changing temperatures can alter tire pressure. Make sure all tires are filled to their recommended tire pressure. Also check for tread wear. The National Highway Transportation Safety Board says you need at least 2/32" of depth to be safe. Tires play a huge role in how well your car handles in sloppy cold driving conditions, so pump 'em up.

Kia Motors America Partners With HerHighway In A Nationwide Drive To Raise Awareness Of Breast Cancer

Breast-cancer-event

Kia Motors America (KMA) announced today that it has partnered with HerHighway.com, an online site empowering women with bumper-to-bumper automobile knowledge, to supply Kia vehicles for "Drive Breast Cancer  Awareness," an across-the-nation drive event, which aims to raise public awareness around Breast Cancer.  The eight-day cross-country road trip will start in Los Angeles on September 25 and finish in New York City on October 2, which marks the start of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

More than 100 women will participate, including Breast Cancer survivors, journalists, bloggers and race car drivers Shea Holbrook, Ashley Van Dyke and Melanie Troxel.  The vehicles that KMA is providing for the drive include the 2013 Kia Sportage EX, 2013 Kia Soul! (Exclaim) and 2012 Kia Optima Hybrid.  Along the way, the drivers will make pit stops at various locations to talk about the event and to raise awareness about Breast Cancer.  The public can also follow the drivers via Twitter with the #HerHighway and #Kia hashtags.

"Kia is deeply committed to supporting HerHighway and the 'Drive Breast Cancer Awareness' event which delivers much-needed awareness towards a disease that affects approximately one in eight women in the United States," said Michael Sprague, executive vice president, marketing & communications, KMA.  "Kia vehicles such as the Sportage, Optima and Soul are perfect vehicles for a cross-country road trip, and it is our privilege to provide these vehicles that will help HerHighway get the word out about Breast Cancer."

The "Drive Breast Cancer Awareness" campaign started in 2011 when its founder Christina Selter, HerHighway's Editor-in-Chief, was diagnosed with possible ALCL, a rare form of liquid Breast Cancer.  Since her diagnosis, Selter's goal has been to bring potentially life-saving information about breast cancer to women across the country through this drive. A few weeks after the conclusion of the event, Selter will undergo a full Capsulectomy.

How To Double Your Car’s Fuel Economy Without Spending Any Money

Fuelgauge

Before you turn your car on...

1. Prepare yourself. Buckle your seat belt, adjust your mirrors, check your lipstick, set up your cell phone. Also, instead of turning on the motor and rolling down to the end of your driveway to see if it's safe to turn out, wait until you're sure that it is, and then start moving.

2. Choose your route. Driving the main interstates or arterials is not always the best way to get from point A to point B. There's often less traffic if you take a more direct route, even if the posted speed is slower. Besides, "speed is the enemy of fuel economy."

3. See how far you can roll. If you're on a slope, why do you need your engine? Put the car in neutral, take your foot off the brake, and coast until your first stop. Your top speed will probably be 5 to 10 mph.

4. Limit the amount of heat and air-conditioning you use. In an urban environment, air-condition can lower fuel economy by as much as 30 percent. If you can't get by without it, try turning it off temporarily at a stoplight or stop sign, so you don't further reduce your car's efficiency during acceleration.

5. Keep a constant load on your engine. Imagine a roller coaster: It goes down hills and up hills, but never stops completely. You can do the same thing in your car-using momentum you've already generated-but without sacrificing as much speed. So instead of setting the cruise control to 60 and having the engine work overtime to maintain that speed on an incline, lock your foot on the accelerator in a fixed position; you'll lose a little speed cresting the hill, but pick it right back up going down the other side. And your engine will never know the difference. Ditto the cars behind you.

6. Experiment with "pulse and glide," a technique whereby you accelerate to the speed limit and then coast in neutral until you lose too much speed. You would get phenomenal results by speeding up to 50 mph and slowing down to 5 mph (which is impractical basically everywhere), but you'll see satisfying results in almost any range in between.

Aspiring contestants are invited to create a 90-second music video that is synchronized to “In My Mind”. Troubleshooting Your Windshield Wipers: Smearing in Both Directions

Lmc

If your wipers smear water in both directions, you may have one of the following problems:

  • worn blades
  • a dirty windshield and/or wiper blade
  • sub-par windshield wiper fluid

Try using new wiper fluid and cleaning the windshield and wiper blades before you replace the blades. To clean your wiper blades, simply wipe them with a clean rag dipped in hot, soapy water. After you clean off the soap, wipe the edge of the blade with rubbing alcohol. That can help with reducing streaks on your windshield.

Rear-engined Kia Cee’d made by Mito Motorsports

Ceed

A one-off extreme Kia Cee’d, with a rear engine and a lot of power, has been recently unveiled by the engineers at Mito Motorsports.

The Kia Cee’d can be considered just a regular car which is an interesting alternative to the VW Golf and other vehicles in the segment but who would have thought that the hatchback has what it takes to end up in a poster on the wall of 10-year old boys. Well, we kind of have the answer to that question and it’s a two-word one: Mito Motorsports.

The engineers at Mito Motorsports have recently taken on the Kia Cee’d and what came out can only be named “impressive”. According to the company, the Kia Cee’d in question has a dramatic change, which is the engine being moved to the back of the vehicle, meaning that the South Korean hatchback has just become rear-engined.

Besides moving the unit to the other end of the car, the engineers at Mito Motorsports have also pumped it and the 2.0 liter turbo diesel is now generating a total output of 200 horsepower (147 kW), but the company is saying that the output will eventually be increased to 300 HP (220 kW). The rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Cee’d’s weight distribution is at 43:57.

2013 Kia Forte LX - Kelley Blue Book's Review

2013-kia-forte

Kia has been on a roll as of late, and nowhere is its momentum more obvious than in the 2013 Forte. Available as a sedan, 5-door hatch and coupe (Kia spells it "Koup"), the Forte takes direct aim at the segment leaders Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, and beats them in just about every category. While not as stylish or fun to drive as Ford's Focus or Mazda's Mazda3, the Forte nevertheless can hold its own against most compacts. It offers an impressive list of available features, including a navigation radio with rear backup camera, Bluetooth hands-free calling and keyless access with push-button start. There's also Kia's standard 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, which is still one of the best in the business.

You'll Like This Car If...
If your budget says mac and cheese, but your self-worth demands prime rib, one of the three 2013 Kia Forte compacts is sure to satisfy both demands. Good resale and reliability ratings should ease worries for first-time Kia buyers, as should the robust standard warranty.

You May Not Like This Car If...
Looks can sometimes be deceiving. While the 2013 Kia Forte LX and EX may appear sporty, their overall ride and handling aren't as tight or refined as the Ford Focus or VW Jetta. The exception here is the SX trim, which has a more responsive suspension and a stronger engine.

What's New for 2013
For 2013, the Kia Forte receives only minor changes. There are new 16-inch wheels for the Koup and 5-door, while power-folding side mirrors are added to the EX and SX trims. All models receive a low washer-fluid warning light, and LED daytime running lights are offered on the EX and made standard on the SX.

Driving It
Driving Impressions
On the open road, the 2013 Kia Forte is the master of its domain – so long as the road to that domain remains straight and level. Toss in a few curves, however, and the Forte LX and EX, with their smaller engine and wheel/tire combo, aren't as much fun to drive as the more powerful SX trim. Even in its most aggressive SX suit, the Forte won't deliver the kind of seat-of-your-pants cornering found in the Ford Focus or Mazda3, and its manual transmission is nowhere near as refined. Don't get us wrong; the Forte is not terribly slow or devoid of feedback to the driver, it's just that the sporty exterior had us hoping for a bit more performance. Most drivers will likely appreciate the Forte's ability to prevent wind, engine or road noise from making their ways into the cabin.

Favorite Features
COMPREHENSIVE AUDIO SYSTEM
Every 2013 Kia Forte boasts a flexible AM/FM/CD/MP3/satellite audio system with USB and auxiliary ports. When matched with the upgraded speakers, it's among the best sound systems in the segment.

BLUETOOTH
An option reserved for most high-end models, Kia makes Bluetooth connectivity standard on every 2013 Kia Forte. Are you listening, competition?

Vehicle Details
Interior

The 2013 Kia Forte is given a visually appealing dash and seat setup, with lots of colorful instruments, a big LCD screen for the audio and plenty of soft-touch materials throughout the cabin. We think a bit more attention could have been paid to the seats, which lack support for the lower back and thighs. Despite its small size, the Kia Forte sedan and hatchback (and to a lesser degree, the Koup) provide surprisingly large cabins, with more interior volume than a Nissan Maxima. The big back seat offers lots of legroom, but headroom is cut short due to the low-slung roofline.

Exterior

In the compact car class, the 2013 Kia Forte's styling falls somewhere mid-pack. Not as modern or aggressively styled as the Ford Focus or Mazda3, the Forte easily outshines the tepid Toyota Corolla and Nissan Sentra. Although the Forte Koup steals the show, the sedan and hatchback both share the signature Kia grille and headlight design as well as handsome wheel choices. Base-model cars don't look the part, rejecting the unpainted bumpers, mirror caps and door handles of lesser cars and replacing them with properly painted parts for a more harmonious exterior statement.

Notable Standard Equipment
Even the most basic Kia Forte for 2013 will include Bluetooth phone connectivity, iPod integration, an AM/FM/CD/MP3/SiriusXM 4-speaker stereo, color-keyed manual side mirrors, 60/40-split rear seat with folding armrest, a tilt steering wheel and an impressive array of safety equipment including six airbags and electronic traction and stability control. Unfortunately, if you want such simple pleasures as power windows, remote keyless entry or cruise control, you'll have to pony up a bit more cash and move up to the EX or SX trims, which also bring a 6-speaker AM/FM/MP3/SiriusXM audio head unit, heated power side mirrors and a tilt-telescopic steering wheel.

Notable Optional Equipment
Options for the 2013 Kia Forte are limited to the EX and SX trims and include a number of packages as well as some stand-alone features. The Forte EX sedan offers a Premium Package that adds alloy wheels and a power sunroof, as well as a Technology Package (sedan/hatchback/Koup) that includes navigation with Sirius real-time traffic updates, a rearview camera, automatic climate control, smart-key entry with push-button start, foglights and automatic headlights. Options for the SX trim include leather seating surfaces, heated front seats and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Under the Hood
The front-wheel-drive 2013 Kia Forte offers a 156-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that can be matched with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed Sportmatic automatic transmission. On top-line, sport-tuned SX trims the standard engine is a 173-horsepower, 2.4-liter engine. The Forte's automatic transmission has a manual-shift mode and is standard on SX and EX sedan and hatchback models, and available on the Koup. The mid-trim EX is also offered with a Fuel Economy Package that includes the 6-speed automatic plus Motor Drive Power Steering, a load-managing "smart" alternator, low rolling-resistance tires and unique aero enhancements to boost its EPA numbers to 27/37 mpg and deliver class-leading city/highway combined fuel economy of 30 mpg.

2.0-liter inline-4
156 horsepower @ 6,200 rpm (Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle [SULEV]: 154 @ 6200 rpm)
144 lb-ft of torque @ 4,300 rpm (SULEV: 139 @ 4600 rpm)
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 25/34 mpg (manual), 26/36 mpg (automatic), 27/37 mpg (Economy Package), 24/33 mpg (manual, coupe), 25/34 mpg (automatic, coupe)

2.4-liter inline-4
173 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm (SULEV: 165 @ 6000 rpm)
168 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpm (SULEV: 161 @ 4000 rpm)
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 23/32 mpg (automatic, sedan), 22/32 mpg (manual), 23/31 mpg (automatic, Koup)

Pricing Notes
For 2013, the Kia Forte sedan has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting just over $16,000 and topping out at about $25,000 fully loaded. The 5-door model ranges from around $19,000 to $25,000, while the Koup starts at around $18,000 and goes to about $24,000. Be sure and check our Fair Purchase Price to see what the Kia Forte is selling for in your area. In a feature-based comparison, the 2013 Kia Forte sedan offers more for the money than many cars in the segment, including the Honda Civic and Mazda3. Substandard resale values have traditionally erased Kia's up-front price advantages, but the Forte's resale outlook is significantly better than that of the Kia Spectra it replaced, making Kia's newest compact car its most compelling ever.

The 2012 Kia Sportage among Autobytel Fast Five Affordable SUVs!

Though they typically get worse gas mileage and cost more than a similarly sized car, SUVs remain a popular choice with consumers. They ride higher and provide a better view of the road ahead, they impart an active lifestyle in the rugged outdoors, and they provide flexible space combined with the ability to carry plenty of cargo. Additionally, there are several affordable suvs for 2012, though choosing one of them requires compromise.

The most affordable SUVs for 2012 cost less than $20,000, and the least expensive model runs $15,995 before applying the destination charge. Paying a low price for an affordable sport utility vehicle, however, means settling for two-wheel drive and, potentially, a manual gearbox. Adding all-wheel drive and an automatic will push the price higher, and that’s before installing options.

From a pricing standpoint, these five sport-utes are the best affordable SUVs of 2012, listed in declining order of price from most to least expensive.

Kia_sportage

If you seek style and sophistication in an affordable sport-utility vehicle, it’s impossible to beat the 2012 Kia Sportage.

Granted, the one selling for $18,500 is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, but it has a 2.4-liter four-cylinder making 176 horsepower, more than any other model on this list of the most affordable SUVs for 2012. In combined driving, this powertrain combination is rated to get 24 mpg, and Kia covers the engine and transmission for 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Additionally, the Sportage is protected by a five-year/60,000-mile warranty, and features free 24-hour roadside assistance for that period of time.

The Sportage isn’t a stripped-down SUV, either. It comes standard with aluminum wheels, air conditioning, power side mirrors, power windows, power door locks, a tilt steering wheel, and a trip computer. The stereo includes Bluetooth hands-free calling and audio streaming, along with satellite radio, an auxiliary audio input jack, and a USB/iPod connection. The Sportage is also equipped with four-wheel-disc brakes, Hill-start Assist Control, and Downhill Brake Control.

If you want an automatic transmission, the LX trim level is a requirement, and the Sportage’s price jumps to $20,800. All-wheel drive adds another $1,500 on top of that. Still, there’s no denying that the Sportage is one of the most affordable SUVs for 2012, and one of the most appealing.
